Is it possible to suspend Georgia’s visa-free travel to EU countries?

Recently, statements have been made frequently regarding the suspension of visa liberalization for Georgian citizens in the EU countries. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk spoke in parliament about illegal migration and mentioned Georgia in this context. According to Tusk, he is ready to use existing methods to change international law in order to minimize the risk of illegal migration. He noted that he is creating the necessary majority to limit or suspend visa-free travel, including with Georgia. The issue of visa liberalization was touched upon by the EU Ambassador to Georgia, Pawel Herczynski. “The majority of EU members are against suspending visa-free travel,” said the European diplomat. “It can be said that the majority of member states are against this for a very simple reason — we do not want ordinary people to pay the price for the decisions, actions and legislation adopted by the Georgian authorities. Therefore, at this stage, we have decided to suspend visa-free travel only for holders of diplomatic and service passports. At this stage, we assure you that Georgian citizens can travel to the European Union without a visa,” Herczynski said.
